Last edited: Sunday November 3rd 2013
On Wednesday 30th October 2013 after 8 long months the day finally came when the track fully refurbished re-opened for use.The opening ceremony was performed by Mr Peter Carey the Mayor of Warrington accompanied by the Great Britain International and 2012 European Indoor 800 metres Champion Jenny Meadows. Also in attendance were James Gladman and Alex Wort Junior Internationals who both made the journey back from University for the event and John Nicholls 21 times Cheshire Shot Putt Champion and now multi title winner at Masters level currently European Indoor and Outdoor Champion for the over 45 age group. .With the infield of the track also being for Rugby and Football there was repesentation from local clubs and also the Disabled Cycling who have use of the track on Fridays
Following the cutting of the ribbon the young athletes from the club took off in a charge around the new BLUE track. After this there was a plaque commemorating the opening unveiled by The Mayor and Jenny Meadows. This was then followed by the best kept secret when another plaque was unveiled by The Mayor and Neville Jones. This was in commemoration of Neville having been a member of the Club for the past 50 years as athlete and coach. Neville only found out the plaque was for him when The Mayor pointed it out to him.
The Club would like to express their thanks to the Borough Council for their help in the past and in getting the track brought up to its present condition and look forward to working with them in the future. The club would also like to thank the Ground Staff Warren,Alan and all others for their help on training nights and especially at all meetings that have been held at the track as these would not have been possible without them and we look forward to their continued help and support.
Following the opening ceremony a short programme of track events took place with the medals being presented to the first three in each event by The Mayor and Jenny Meadows with all being delighted to also be photographed. The track programme was concluded by two relays the first being an attempt to run faster than Jenny Meadows' personal best time for 800 metres of 1 minute 57.93 seconds and then an attempt to run a sub 4 minute mile. Both attempts proved to be successful. Each race was run in teams of 5 with each running 100 metres stages.
