The North of England Cross Country Championships were held at a very soggy Knowsley Safari Park Liverpool on Saturday 25th January.
The day started for Warrington Athletic Club with the first race for the under 17 Ladies where 15 year old Harriet Knowles-Jones two weeks after making her GB international dominated the race.Taking the lead from the gun Harriet gradually wore the field down on the first lap by which time she had a lead of around 30 metres.on the second lap she continued to increase her lead eventually coming home for the Gold Medal 45 seconds clear in 18 minutes 43 seconds.Behind her Alysha Goddard had her best run to date finishing in 23rd place in 21 minutes 50 seconds.
The second medal for the club came in the under 13 Boys race where 11 year old Sam Evans ran a superb race.Always in the leading group Sam fought all the way to the finish to take the Bronze Medal in 11 minutes 30 seconds missing the Silver by 1 second.Behind Sam Ben Harrison ran well to finish in 49th place in 12 minutes 45 seconds as did Jordan Jones in 13 minutes 03 seconds in 71st place. The team was completed by Zach Mills in 151st place in 14 minutes 56 seconds. The team finished in 10th place on 274 points.
In the under 17 Menís race Liam Burthem had an excellent run to take 5th place in 20 minutes 13 seconds and was closely followed by Daniel Evans in 8th place in 20 minutes 26 seconds.Leighton Sharman had his usual reliable performance finishing in 53rd place in 22 minutes 25 seconds. The team was completed by Chris Fance in 84th place in 23 minutes 28 seconds placing the team 7th on 150 points.Robert Dykes ran well to finish 92nd in 23 minutes 55 seconds.
In the under 20 Menís race Cameron Field was the only runner from the club but did not disappoint with an excellent performance. In 5th place for most of the race he was caught by two runners late on the final lap and eventually finished in 7th place in 28 minutes 13 seconds.
In the under 15 Boys race Owen Lee was the first club runner in 37th place in 15 minutes 19 seconds with Jack Stubbings close behind in 46th place in 15 minutes 28 seconds.Sam Rostron finished 101st in 16 minutes 32 seconds.
In the under 13 Girls the team was led home by the youngest runner and possibly the smallest in the race Lucia Meloni who qualified to run as she was eleven before the day of the race.Lucia worked her way through the field to finish in 75th place in 13 minutes 49 seconds.Close behind in 84th place was Isabelle Trevithick in 13 minutes 58 seconds .The team was completed by Megan Atherton in 137th place in 14 minutes 32 seconds and India Hayes 146th in 14 minutes 42 seconds placing the team 18th on 442 points.Jessica Wall completed the club contingent in 206th place in 16 minutes 31 seconds with her best run to date.
In the under 15 Girls the race did not start well with the team being crowded up against the tapes marking the course by runners moving across from the right at the start. With this happening Sarah McGrail found herself at the back of the field and had to work her way through.Lauren Ferris had her heel trodden on at the first corner and lost a shoe.Lauren continued with one shoe and ran well to finish in 25th place in 16 minutes 45 seconds.Melissa Boyer ran well to finish 47th in 17 minutes 14 seconds and Sarah managed to work her way up to 49th place in 17 minutes 18 seconds.the team was completed by Lauren Goddard in 55th place in 17 minutes 23 seconds placing the team in 7th place on 176 points.Normally the first counter Victoria Ramsbottom suffered when the weather turned wild and she struggled with her breathing dropping back to finish in 59th place in 17 minutes 28 seconds.behind her Amy Gibbons finished 74th in 18 minutes exactly and Georgia Aston-Massey who had lost a shoe in this race last year suffering frostbite finished in 95th place in 18 minutes 43 seconds with both shoes still on.
