English National Cross Country Championships 22nd February 2014 Wollaton Park Nottingham

Eighteen Warrington Athletic Club runners travelled to Wollaton Park Nottingham for the English national Cross Country Championships on Saturday 22nd February.On a course which was drying but with a couple of swampy stretches the star of the day for the club was Harriet Knowles-Jones in the under 17 ladies which was the first race.From the gun Harriet was in the leading group and along with Lydia Turner(Birtley) and Bobby Clay (Invicta East Kent) she pulled clear to settle the medallists early.The three continued to battle until about three quarter distance when Harriet was unable to hold on.Harriet continued to fight all the way and collected the Bronze Medal in 17 minutes 39 seconds with the race being won by Lydia from Bobby in a sprint finish(17:25 to 17:29).Also running was Holly Tidd who ran well to finish in 132nd place in 22 minutes 30 seconds.
In the under 15 girls race Lauren Ferris continued her good form to lead the team home in 47th place in 16 minutes 56 seconds.the team was completed by Melissa Boyer 91st in 17 minutes 34 seconds,Sarah McGrail 159th and Olivia Bush 160th both in 18 minutes 17 seconds.Amy Gibbons and Georgia Aston-Massey ran well to finish in 199th and 215th recording 18 minutes 43 seconds and 18 minutes 53 seconds respectively.
In the Junior Ladies race Katie Ashcroft ran well to finish in 88th place in 27 minutes exactly.
In the under 13 boys event 12 year old Sam Evans ran a very good race to finish in 21st place in 11 minutes 39 seconds.All bar one of the athletes ahead of Sam will move up to the under 15 age group for next year.Jordan Jones ran well fighting all the way to finish in 189th in 13 minutes exactly.
In the under 15 boys race Owen Lee ran well to finish in 107th place in 15 minutes 48 seconds with Luke Gamble having his best run of the season in 141st place in 16 minutes 06 seconds and Jack Stubbings 167th in 16 minutes 23 seconds.
In the under 17 menís race Dan Evans and Liam Burthem were the only runners from the club both running well to finish Dan in 24th place in 20 minutes 39 seconds and Liam 33rd in 20 minutes 57 seconds.
In the Junior menís race Cameron Field after a steady start worked his way through the field to finish in 45th place in 33 minutes 52 seconds.
The day was brought to a close by the Senior menís race with around 1700 starters and 1657 finishers.Steve Burthem (veteran over 50) was the only runner from the club finishing in 903rd place in 49 minutes 43 seconds for the 12 Kilometres course.
Well ahead of Steve was a former Warrington Athletic Club member John Gilbert now running for Kent Athletic Club.John who was the first British runner in last yearís London Marathon ran a superb race.In the leading group from the outset he fought all the way to the finish.In 4th place at one point he was caught in the closing stages to eventually finish in 6th place in 36 minutes 51 seconds only 28 seconds behind winner Steve Vernon (Stockport)who was becoming the most bemedalled runner in the long history of the race with this being his 8th medal.
