The English Schools Championships were held at Alexander Stadium Birmingham on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th July with Warrington Athletic Club athletes winning two titles for the first time since 1975.In the Intermediate Girls 800 metres Carys McAulay followed the pace till entering the finish straight where she burst through to win in a new personal best time of 2 minutes 10.89 seconds. In the final she again followed the pace and survived her heel being clipped after 300 metres when one of her opponents fell.As she reached 600 metres she lost a few yards as the pace increased but entering the finish straight she again produced a fast finish to storm past and clear to take the Gold Medal in another personal best time of 2 minutes 09.93 seconds. This sets up a battle in the SIAB championships on Saturday 20th July in Cardiff where she will face Jemma Reekie the Scottish Schools Champion who has been selected for the 800 metres by Scotland for the Celtic Games in which Carys has been selected for the 4 x400 metres relay.
The second title was won by Harriet Knowles-Jones in the Intermediate Girls 3000 metres where she lived up to her billing as the favourite taking the lead from the gun she pulled away relentlessly to win the Gold Medal in a time of 9 minutes 27.15 seconds a new championship best performance.Harriet has also been selected for the English Schools team for the SIAB Championships along with Carys.Behind Harriet Sarah McGrail finished in 17th place in 10 minutes 22.68 seconds.
In the Junior Boys 100 metres Fisayo Williamson-Taylor ran a best time of 11.24 seconds although it was wind assisted in his heat finishing 2nd to qualify for the final. In the final he was unable to reproduce the time finishing in 6th place with 11.43 seconds. In the Junior Girls 800 metres Melissa Boyer finished in 4th place in her heat in 2 minutes 16.89 seconds but failed to progress to the final. In the same age group Lauren Ferris finished in 10th place in her 1500 metres heat in 4 minutes 48.27 seconds.
In the Intermediate Boys 1500 metres Daniel Evans finished in 6th place in his heat in 4 minutes 02.68 seconds qualifying for the final as a fastest loser. In the final he finished in 11th place in 4 minutes 09.66 seconds. In the Senior Boys 800 metres Matt Wigelsworth finished 6th in his heat with 1 minute 58.76 seconds failing to progress to the final while in the 1500 metres which was a straight final Cameron Field set the pace from the gun but drifted backwards as the race progressed finishing in 16th place in 4 minutes 06.59 seconds. In the senior Girls 1500 metres Steeplechase Alysha Goddard who was selected on the strength of getting under the qualifying time in a race where the water jump was not used fully justified her selection finishing in 8th place with an excellent run to record a legal personal best time of 5 minutes 18.77 seconds.
