Warrington Athletic Club’s two star under 17 women Harriet Knowles-Jones and Carys McAulay represented English Schools in the Schools International Athletic Board Championships at Cardiff International Stadium on Saturday 19th July and both came home as British Schools Champions.
In the Intermediate 3000 metres Harriet took the lead from the start and as in the English Schools Championships last week she ground out a relentless pace to burn off her opponents.Following a fast start she settled in to a steady pace which she maintained to the finish to take the Gold Medal in a new Championship Best time of 9 minutes 29.11 seconds breaking the previous best time of 9 minutes 30.0 seconds set by Yvonne Murray in 1983.Yvonne Murray went on to win among many titles World Indoor,European Indoor and Outdoor 3000 metres and Commonwealth 10,000 metres plus Olympic Bronze at 3000 metres.
In the 800 metres Carys showed that she does not just rely on a fast finish taking the lead from the gun she controlled the pace throughout and then ran away from the opposition in the home straight to take the Gold Medal in a new personal best time of 2 minutes 09.65 seconds which moves her to 5th in the UK rankings just behind Harriet and makes her 1st ranked Scot ahead of Jemma Reekie who finished behind her here.
