The European Cross Country Championships were held at the Hyeres Hippodrome horse racing track in Southern France on a typical European course which was completely flat apart from a few small artificial hills and some logs put in by the organisers.
Warrington Athletic Clubs under 20 Cross Country star Harriet Knowles-Jones was part of the under 20 Womens Team and ran a superb race.Always amongst the leaders as her teammate Bobby Clay set the pace Harriet was still there as they moved into the final 800 metres soon after this it was down to three as Clay began to lose contact.Harriet then took up the running pushing ahead but was followed by Konstanze Klosterhalfen of Germany. As they turned the final corner 200 metres from the line Harriet had a few strides lead but the German proved stronger and passed her with about 100 metres to go to take the Gold Medal while Harriet had to settle for a fantastic Silver Medal with Alina Reh of Germany coming through late on to take the Bronze Medal.Harriet was backed up by Bobby Clay (5th),Sabrina Sinha (11th) and Mari Smith (22nd) to add Team Silver Medals.
In an interview following her race Harriet said I am over the moon! I did not expect it. I tried to break out from the group towards the end but the German girl (Konstanze Klosterhalfen, winner) kicked with about 200 meters to go. She was just too strong.
This was the first race of the day and the British Team continued to collect medals in the other five races with Jonathan Davies taking Gold in the under 23 mens race and also Team Silver. In the Senior Womens race Kate Avery repeated her Silver Medal from last years event leading the team to Gold Medals. In the Junior Mens race the Team took the Bronze Medals as did the Senior Men while in the under 23 Womens Race Track Star Laura Muir in 4th place led the Team to Gold Medals.
