HARRIET Knowles-Jones is celebrating this week after leading Great Britain to cross country glory in Italy on Sunday.

The Warrington Athletics Club runner's third place in the European Cross Country Championships in Sardinia secured the gold medal for the under 20s womens team.

Harriet came home in 12mins 52secs, behind Germanys Olympic 1,500m semi-finalist Konstanze Klosterhalfen and defending champion Anna Emilie Moller from Denmark.

Amelia Quirk, ninth, Victoria Weir, 10th, and Gemma Holloway, 11th, completed the British line-up.

Knowles-Jones mum, Jayne a former UK 1,500m champion, said: Harriet was so excited to be given the flag it was the highlight of her day, along with the national anthem being played for the team gold!

The performance caps a stunning year for the 18-year-old, who has climbed to second in the UK under 20s 1,500m rankings and finished eighth with a personal best 4mins 15.49secs in the final of the middle-distance event in the IAAF World Junior Championships.
